Day County Veterans Service Officer Kevin Bohn and Prairie Mound Cemetery sexton Rick Buhler work together to set the new Civil War marker for Chauncey Morey at the Butler cemetery April 29. Morey, who died in 1899, served in the Minnesota Infantry Company D during the Civil War. His great-granddaughters searched for his grave for nearly 20 years before finding it and persisted in having the simple head stone replaced with an official white marble Civil War grave marker.

Family finds veteran’s grave, petitions to have official Civil War gravestone placed

Years of researching and walking cemeteries have finally paid off for the descendants of one Civil War veteran who was laid to rest in Day County. Next Monday, the great-granddaughters of Chauncey Morey will attend the Memorial Day program at Prairie Mound Cemetery north of Butler where they will, for the first time, see his new, official Civil War headstone.
